Sprinkler Systems 101: Essential Knowledge for Toronto Homeowners

Before you commit to a sprinkler system you do not need a course in irrigation engineering — but a few minutes of background reading will make every conversation with a contractor more productive. Here is the short version of what to know.

What the system actually does

An underground sprinkler system is plumbing for your landscape. A controller turns electric valves on and off in sequence. Each valve feeds a zone of sprinkler heads, each tuned to the planting it serves. Rain sensors and smart controllers keep the system honest. When the cycle ends, the heads retract flush with the lawn and disappear until tomorrow morning.

The pieces, in plain language

Controller: the brain — programs run times by zone, day of week, and season.
Valves: the gates — typically housed in a buried valve box, opened by the controller one zone at a time.
Heads: spray, rotor, or drip — chosen to match each area.
Pipe and fittings: the buried infrastructure.
Sensors: rain, freeze, soil moisture — optional but high-value.

Choosing types of heads

Spray heads suit small or oddly shaped turf and narrow beds. Rotors handle open lawn at distance. Drip emitters and inline tubing are the right answer for flowerbeds, hedges and vegetable gardens. A good designer mixes all three within a single system.

Installation in a GTA backyard

For most homes, installation runs one to two days. Utility locates are arranged before any digging. We use trenchless pipe-pulling machines to lay the line with almost no disturbance to existing sod. After commissioning we walk you through the controller, sensor settings, and seasonal expectations.

Cost and the conversation that matters

Cost varies with property size, water service, planting and zone count. Honest contractors will not quote without seeing the property. We provide an itemised written estimate after the walkthrough — no surprises, no high-pressure follow-up.

What ongoing care looks like

Two visits a year: a spring start-up in April or May, and a fall blow-out / winterization between September and November. Repairs and tune-ups in between are by request. The same technicians return year after year.
