A healthy back lawn is not the result of any one thing you do — it is the cumulative effect of a few small habits applied consistently over a season.
Water deep and infrequently
Short daily watering trains roots to live near the surface, where they cook in heatwaves. Longer watering every second or third day drives roots downward toward stored soil moisture.
Water in the morning
Between 4 AM and 7 AM is ideal. Cool temperatures, minimal evaporation, and the foliage dries before nightfall.
Mow taller than you think
Three inches is a reasonable cutting height for most GTA lawns. Taller grass shades soil, conserves moisture and produces a denser, more weed-resistant turf.
Aerate, top-dress, and overseed in fall
Compacted soil chokes roots. Once a year — ideally in early September — pull cores, top-dress with a thin layer of compost or screened topsoil, and overseed.
Feed lightly, twice a season
A slow-release fertiliser in late spring and early fall is usually all a healthy lawn needs.
