Watering looks simple. It is not — at least not if you want the lawn and gardens to actually thrive. Below are three habits we recommend to every Toronto-area homeowner, whether they have a Pro Green system or a stack of hose-end sprinklers.
One — water deeply, not often
Light, daily watering trains roots to stay near the surface, where they dry out and stress fastest in hot weather. A deeper, less frequent watering pushes roots down toward stored soil moisture and produces a lawn that survives August. For most established lawns in the GTA, one inch of water per week — delivered in two or three sessions — is the right target.
Two — water early
Between 4 AM and 7 AM is ideal. Evaporation is minimal, wind drift is low, and grass dries off before nightfall (which reduces fungal disease). Evening watering, especially in humid Toronto summers, invites problems. If you do not have a timer-driven system, this is the single biggest reason to install one.
Three — match water to plant
Lawn, shaded perennials, and vegetable beds all want different amounts of water. A flowerbed under a tree often needs half what the front lawn does; a tomato patch needs twice. Zone your watering — or your sprinkler system — accordingly. Trying to keep everything happy on the same schedule overwaters some plants and underwaters others.
